1.1 What subjects do you teach?
We teach Physics and Chemistry. If you would like help with Mathematics, please check out the references on our bookings page.
1.2 Where can I access your services?
Exam prep seminars are presented in the locations shown on the Venues page. We also present seminars on request for groups of 20 or more students.
NOTE: Check 1.10 for venue details.
1.3 What is the difference between an exam prep seminar and a comprehensive content class?
These services are designed to be complimentary, but are also beneficial in their own right. Exam prep seminars are full-day sessions that are hosted only on weekends before specific exams – these seminars are super effective for revising a specific grade’s examinable work. Classes (comprehensive content classes) are more frequent topic-specific sessions that teach all the essentials from scratch. Learners can pick and choose respective classes, based on their individual academic needs.
NOTE: You can find specific details (such as times and costs) by scrolling to the bottom of the Seminars and Classes pages.
1.4 Where can I find an events calendar with session dates?
Exam prep seminar timetable: click on the Seminars link (or go to www.scienceclinic.co.za/bookings/) and select your course preferences.
The Comprehensive Content Class timetable will become available throughout the year, as respective centers evaluate the needs of their registered seminar attendees.
1.5 Who will benefit from joining a seminar?
Exam prep seminars are beneficial to all students – both academically mature and less developed students benefit from the revision opportunity. Exam prep seminars create an opportunity for learners to revise intensively and effectively, with immediate access to expert help. Seminar presenters implement work-flow for every topic: learners that have a good grasp of the topic are fast-tracked with additional exam questions, whilst learners that struggle with the specific topic focus more on academic foundations.
1.6 Which seminars do you recommend?
We recommend that students join us for four (4) seminars a year, during the mid-year (Grade 11’s) or prelims (Matrics) and again before the final exams.
For cities where additional “spring” seminars are offered during the October holidays, exactly the same core theory is covered, but different exam questions are revised. We highly recommend that students prioritise the spring sessions over the final exam sessions, as it offers a head-start on intensive revision, and allows the option for the student to return for the final sessions in the event that they wish to work out more exam questions under our tutelage.
1.7 What sections of work are taught during an exam prep seminar?
We teach all examinable topics during every seminar, as required by the syllabus standard assessment guidelines. Note for mid-year Grade 11 and IEB prelim seminars: due to a myriad factors, various schools teach at different speeds and some IEB schools do not follow a set chronological teaching order. For mid-year Grade 11 and IEB prelim seminars, Science Clinic implements the following work-flow:
1. Common chapters/topics that all students have done at school are covered first.
2. Thereafter, Science Clinic's seminar presenter continues to teach further examinable chapters/topics, as per the standard assessment guidelines.
3. If a seminar attendee has not yet covered a respective chapter/topic at school, we recommend the following two activities:
The seminar attendee can follow the revision lecture for that topic, which helps them to create a first impression of the work. This creates an intellectual framework which primes their uptake when the topic is covered at school.
The seminar Smart Prep Book contains additional exam questions, which are specifically intended to challenge faster learners or learners that have not done a specific topic. If a seminar attendee does not want to cover new work, they have an opportunity to practice additional exam questions whilst the rest of the class is being taught. The session presenter will attend to their individual questions during the Q&A time.
1.8 Who teaches the seminars and classes?
We work with impeccable Science teachers from both the IEB and the Department of Education. Our teachers are constantly equipped with up-to-date teaching resources which are developed by our national team of subject advisors.
1.9 Are seminars also presented in Afrikaans?
Please check the Venues page for details on Afrikaans events.
1.10 Where are the events taught?
Science Clinic's events were historically presented at residential universities throughout South Africa. Due to the unrest at most residential campuses in 2015 and 2016, Science Clinic has adapted its operations to present multiple smaller events in distributed locations. All venues are selected to offer a safe and productive environment for our students and teaching staff. Please check the Venues page for general venue updates. Specific event-related venue details are sent to registered learners on Thursdays before respective events.
